Chairs Turned
|
Jeffery Austin is a contestant from Season 9 of The Voice, as part of Team Gwen.
In the Blind Auditions, only Gwen Stefani turned her chair for Jeffery, stating that she thought he had a lot of potential and wanted to help him going far in the competition. He advanced to the Knockouts round, where he impressed the coaches with his solid rendition of Adele's "Turning Tables", and made it to the Live Playoffs as one of Gwen's stronger contestants: there, his performance of Jessie Ware's "Say You Love Me" solidified his status as a frontrunner, and he advanced to the Top 12 as the top vote getter of Gwen's team. He advanced through the rounds and made it to the semifinals, receiving the iTunes bonus in the Top 12 and 10.
His stripped down version of "Believe" by Cher charted at #3 in the iTunes charts, and he seemed set to make the finale after impressing the viewers round after round. However, he ended up landing in the Middle 3, and had to perform for an Instant Save. He earned a standing ovation from his coach Gwen and Adam Levine, who was open about saying he was one of his biggest fans in the panel and thought he deserved to make it to the finals; Jeffery was eventually Instant Saved and became the 4th finalist.
In the Finale Live Results, he was officially declared 4th place, and remained Gwen's only contestant to make finale until Carter Rubin eventually won the show in Season 19.
Background[]
After Jeffery's father passed away when he was nine years old, Jeffery grew up with his mom, grandparents and brother. During that time, Jeffery pursued music in high school and auditioned for all the school musicals. At 16, with the support of his family, Jeffery came out after years of trying to hide his sexuality. Despite wanting to study music in college, his mom preferred that he take a more stable course. Jeffery majored in communications with an emphasis in advertising. He now works at a public relations firm in New York, but is still itching to do music full-time.
